Disobbediente, 2020, Monte Dall’Ora

A light and peppery red that completely disobeys and rebels against the region

Region: Veneto, Italy
Grape(s): Corvinone & Molinara
Genre: Organic & biodynamic
Low Sulphur: Yes
Tasting Notes: Red fruit, bitter cherries, light, peppery and silky tannins

Husband and wife, Carlo and Alessandra Venturini, both children of farmers, discovered Monte Dall’Ora in 1995 – a crumbling estate that needed a lot of work. Organic from the get go, they started implementing biodynamics in 2006 and now the vineyards are planted with many other plants to encourage biodiversity. You’ll see cherry and olive trees throughout the vineyards, and hints of these flavours in the wines too with their grapes showing a high concentration of flavour. Planted on deep, porous limestone, and trained in the pergola system, vineyard management is key to the success of the Venturinis.

Disobbediente is a troublesome child of Valpolicella. They are harvesting early, destemming and macerating for only 5-6 days to extract some colour and tannin, leaving the wine juicy - a far cry from Ripasso or other marmalade wines from the region. Aged for a few months in cement tanks and bottled with low alcohol, it has lots of energy running through it with red fruits in abundance, light peppery spice and a hint of the olives that hang on the trees in the vineyard. And, it comes in a whole litre to enjoy with lucky friends, or to be savoured singlehandedly.
