Panagiotis Papagiannopoulos is one of the leading lights in Greek wine making. He is the winemaker at Tetramythos, an estate owned by brothers Aristides and Stathis Spanos, which is organically farmed and using mostly local grape varieties. It is situated near Ana Diakopto, overlooking the Gulf of Corinth, and this warm and wild place is moderated by the cooling Mediterranean breezes, the northerly facing aspect of the slopes and the fact that their vineyards are planted between 650 and 1050m above sea level. This creates wines that are ripe but balanced well with acidity. Their ‘natur’ line is wines that are bottled with very little, if any, added SO2, and these are pure and true expensive of this unique terroir and its indigenous grapes.
From 100% Agrippiotis from a 0.3 hectare plot on north-facing slopes at 600m, handpicked grapes are macerated for 20 days without temperature control, allowing colour, tannins, flavour and power to be extracted from the skins. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation and full malolactic fermentation before bottling unfiltered and with minimal sulphur use. The result is tropical and fresh, with pineapple, bergamot, yuzu, grapefruit and spice balanced with prominent acidity and finesse.
