Around 20 miles from the Ardiac coastal town of Ancona, Corrado Dottori is the third generation of his family to tend the vines of La Distesa. Now organic with strong biodiversity – there are peas, alfalfa, fava beans and wild herbs growing between the vines, which have a large effect on the surroundings with some are used for biodynamic preparations – they are based on hillsides at 320 metres above sea level which gives nice cooling effects as well as sun-facing aspects. Corrado wants his terroir to speak the wine, and his low-invention mentality, as well as low yields, bring this out. He has a range of grape varieties that are classic for the region of Marche, and central Italy more generally, and these are often blended to create complex and balanced wines that represent the region.

An even split blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano planted on clay and limestone soils. The Sangiovese is pressed as whole bunches, and the Montepulciano is made as a ‘cerasuolo’ – a classic, almost rosé style of Montepulciano from around Abruzzo – where the grapes are pressed very delicately to extract only a small amount of colour while retaining the fresh fruit notes. The parts ferment together in old oak barrels and then the wine ages for a year in stainless steel tanks. It has cherries screaming through the glass, with touches of cranberry and redcurrant complimented by an earthier and more rustic tinge from the whole-bunch Sangiovese.
