A juicy and fruit driven orange wine with intense minerality

Tasting Notes: Orange peel, fallen apple, stone fruit, herbal, mineral

Around 20 miles from the Ardiac coastal town of Ancona, Corrado Dottori is the third generation of his family to tend the vines of La Distesa. Now organic with strong biodiversity – there are peas, alfalfa, fava beans and wild herbs growing between the vines, which have a large effect on the surroundings with some are used for biodynamic preparations – they are based on hillsides at 320 metres above sea level which gives nice cooling effects as well as sun-facing aspects. Corrado wants his terroir to speak the wine, and his low-invention mentality, as well as low yields, bring this out. He has a range of grape varieties that are classic for the region of Marche, and central Italy more generally, and these are often blended to create complex and balanced wines that represent the region.

Nur is a blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia and Verdicchio that co-ferment on the skins for two weeks in old French oak barrels, before ageing for a year in similar vessels. Coming from low-yielding vines planted on clay and limestone soils, there is lots of concentration in the flavours and a leanness coming from the minerality. A delicate touch, with plenty of citrus, stone fruits, blossom and herbs, balancing well with the minerality and a pleasant and noticeable tannin structure – it is an orange wine that can go excellently with food or as a solo event on the terrace.
