Sauvignon, 2019, Damien Menut

A ‘sweet n sour’ Sauvignon with depth and complexity

Region: Touraine, Loire
Grape(s): Sauvignon Blanc
Genre: Organic and some biodynamics (in the mindset, not stamp)
Low Sulphur: Zero
Tasting Notes: Citrus, salinity, herbal, hint of sweetness

Based in Thésée in Touraine, Damien Menut started making wine in 2010 with Bruno Allion – a standard bearer for low-intervention wine making in Loire. Now out on his own, with 4 hectares on deep clay soils, he works organically and biodynamically without certification and doesn’t add anything to the wines at bottling. He uses old barrels for his ageing, even on the whites that are more typically age in steel in the region, to round the fruit and give further dimensions to the wine. As a young maker, his wines already have such precision and depth, expressing terroir and varietal potential in a pure and fantastic way.

Comprised of 100% Sauvignon Blanc from 30 year old vines, fully mature grapes are hand harvested and fermented in old oak barrels. The fermentation completed with around 3 grams/litre residual sugar, but this balances fantastically with the high acidity and green fruit character of Sauvignon. Aged 13 months in the same old barrels, it is bottled with nothing taken away or added. It is rich in the mouth from the slight sugar, with citrus fruit, green notes and salinity.
